PRESS RELEASE by EPPOA, the European Pure Plant Oil Association
May 29th 2008

RESPONSIBLE LIQUID BIOFUEL PRODUCTION CAUSES NO N2O EMISSIONS
Comprehensive biofuel greenhouse gas study disproves Nobel laureate P.J. CRUTZEN's conclusions and shows that, when produced as an integrated part of responsible agricultural systems, first generation biofuels are indeed sustainable
.

The European Pure Plant Oil Association (EPPOA) calls for governments to take a carefully considered approach to ensure sustainable energy production for the future. Contrary to a widely respected paper, a recently released study, completed by the sustainable biofuel expert J. BUGGE, shows that first generation biofuels can indeed be planet cooling. EPPOA cites the new study as a demonstration of the need for a thorough examination of the potentials of biofuels.

The study, "Disproof of the ACP biofuel paper", shows that the ACP (Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics) biofuel paper from 2007, “N2O release from agro-biofuels production negates global warming reduction by replacing fossil fuels”, contains a number of  assumptions and simplifications  that seriously skewed the results. Through a comprehensive examination of the nitrogen cycles in agriculture the disproof demonstrates that responsibly produced biofuels do hold the potential to negate global warming.

Darren HILL, Vice president of EPPOA, said “There has been a growing protest against damaging industrial scale biofuel production. Whilst sharing this concern EPPOA does not want to see this leading to a backlash against all biofuels.  It has been repeatedly shown that when produced as an integrated part of a responsible agricultural system biofuels can offer a truly sustainable source of energy.  We feel that J. BUGGE's work demonstrates the kind of open, honest and robust assessment that is necessary to make the correct choices.”

Norbert CASTAN, president of EPPOA said, “Government and international sustainable energy policy is often formed from a viewpoint which does not consider all factors.  By taking more time to fully investigate the issues and seek out those involved on the ground, best practice can be identified and policy can be formed to support the best sustainable energy production methods. Care should be taken to not become disproportionately influenced by those with large budgets and vested interests or by those considered above scrutiny."

The Disproof of the ACP biofuel paper and all calculations are available online at http://www.ppo.bugge.com/disproof.html with live links, including links to the ACP biofuel paper itself, and links to a number of objections to the ACP biofuel paper presented by esteemed scientists.
